Seven fixes for a form that people abandon

8 min read · Written by the Kavana studio

A clean, well-designed enquiry form

Forms are where interest turns into action — or quietly evaporates. A visitor who was ready to enquire hits a wall of fields, hesitates, and closes the tab. The frustrating part is that most of these losses are avoidable. Here are seven fixes we return to again and again.

1. Ask for less

Every field you add is a small tax on the visitor's patience. Do you really need their company size, their job title and their fax number before you can reply to an enquiry? Strip the form to what you genuinely need to start a conversation. You can always ask for more later.

2. Show progress on longer forms

If a form must be long — say, a detailed project brief — break it into clear steps and show where the visitor is. A progress indicator turns an intimidating wall into a manageable sequence.

3. Label clearly, hint helpfully

Labels should sit above fields, not vanish as placeholder text the moment someone types. Where a field might confuse, add a short hint. Clarity removes the tiny doubts that cause drop-off.

4. Validate kindly, in real time

  • Tell people what went wrong the instant it happens, not after they submit.
  • Point directly to the field that needs attention.
  • Use plain language — "Please enter a valid email" beats a red asterisk.

5. Make it effortless on mobile

Most of your visitors are on a phone. Use the right input types so the correct keyboard appears, keep tap targets large, and never make someone pinch and zoom to read a label. A form that fights the thumb loses.

6. Reduce the perceived risk

Right beside the submit button, reassure people. A line like "We'll reply within one business day and never share your details" removes the last flicker of hesitation. Trust converts.

7. Reward the click

The moment after submission matters. A warm, specific thank-you message — ideally telling them what happens next — leaves a good final impression and sets expectations for your follow-up.

The takeaway

None of these fixes is dramatic on its own. Together, they can lift completions by a third or more. Forms reward attention to detail, which is exactly why so few businesses give them any. Be the exception.
